three day weekend! here's what's up

Aaaaah, Labor Day weekend.  The signal of the end of summer, no matter what the temperature says.  School days return, the beach towels get put away, and we enjoy some deep breaths before the holidays come sooner than we think they should.

If you're in town this weekend, here are some happenings that will help you get out and enjoy Charleston.

The Charleston Battery play tonight against the Puerto Rico Islanders.  Blackbaud Stadium, 8 pm.  Tickets are $8 - $15.

The farmers markets are still rolling along.  Check out the Charleston market downtown, or head north to Summerville or Moncks Corner.  All run Saturday morning and promise fresh produce and free entertainment -- even if it's just people-watching.

It's a pickin' party, and it's free!  Join some great bluegrass and country bands at the Lone Star Barbecue and Mercantile.  The place will be hopping all weekend long!

Get your best Lucy on (nevermind that you'll have to explain who Lucy is to your kids) squishing grapes at the Fifth Annual Grape Stomping Festival at Irvin-House Vineyards.  Saturday, 2-6 pm, $5 a car.

On Sunday, Boone Hall Plantation hosts the Southern National BBQ Championship and Bluegrass Festival.  Ride the carnival rides or the mechanical bull -- your choice.  The festival runs 10:30 am - 10 pm and costs $20 for adults and $8 for kids (6-12 yrs) if you get your tickets in advance.

(As for my household, we're looking at a trip to the beach, hanging out with the kiddos and cheering the return of college football!)

We went to Blowing Rock, NC... not too bad of a drive and a LOVELY drop in temperature!
