hurricane preparation for your family

Earlier this week, all eyes were on the Gulf Coast as Hurricane Gustav made landfall.  Now our attention turns to Hurricane Hannah, which is predicted to hit the coast somewhere between Georgia and South Carolina.  In other words, HERE.  While this particular storm might not be too bad, the fact is that it's hurricane season and we're vulnerable.  Now is the time to get prepared.

The National Hurricane Center offers a number of resources to help you prepare for a hurricane.  Their system includes developing a plan for family and pets, creating a disaster supply kit, making plans for an evacuation, and securing your home.

Here are the South Carolina Hurricane Evacuation routes.  Be sure to fill up with gas before you leave town.  Take cash and important documents (like insurance cards) and make reservations for hotels if needed before you leave home.

Of course, if you're anxious about a hurricane or preparing to evacuate, your kids will be even more uncertain.  As with most difficult events, I think it's best to be honest, straightforward and reassuring.  Validate their concerns and let them know that you are nervous too.  Answer their questions but keep the explanations short and to-the-point.  Don't make promises you can't keep.  Make sure that comfort items (stuffed animals, toys, favorite snacks, etc.) are included in your supply stash.  Give lots of extra cuddles!

The American Red Cross produces a downloadable coloring book (PDF) designed for discussing disaster preparedness with children ages 3-10.  It reviews hurricanes as well as other displays of nature's power like tornadoes and earthquakes.
