Tuesday Top Five: Foods Your Child Probably Hasn't Tried, But Just Might Love

April 28, 2009

I grew up in a household that focused on two key foods: meat and potatoes. It wasn't until I reached my twenties that I started to explore and enjoy a variety of cuisines.  Now, I'm trying to introduce my children to a wide range of foods early on, and one of the richest sources of that palatal diversity is ethnic cuisines.  Here, I've listed five world cuisines with the dishes that have gotten the thumbs-up from the short crowd.

Kid-Friendly Breakfast Nooks in Charleston

March 23, 2009

I don't know how things are around your house at dinnertime, but the 6 pm - 7 pm time slot seems to be a witching hour for my preschoolers. They're tired and cranky and hungry, and while my husband and I might like to head out to dinner sometimes, it's just not worth it. Instead, we've decided to treat the family to a meal out a breakfast on occasion, when the kids are fresh and kid-friendly food options -- pancakes! eggs! bacon! -- abound. Here are a few places I'd recommend if you and the family are eating out for the most important meal of the day.

A guide to shopping local this holiday season

December 03, 2008

We parents are nothing if not consumers. Especially during the holiday season, our spending should be smart, on everything from toys for our kids, teacher gifts, and maybe even a little something for ourselves. It makes good sense given our current state of affairs to channel some of that money into the local economy. This week is "Buy Local Week" in Charleston, presented by Lowcountry Local  Read more...

Day trip: baby does beaufort

September 22, 2008

What do you do with a free Sunday, a tank full of gas, and a wanderlust? Why, you go for a drive, of course! About an hour and a half south of Charleston lies Beaufort, SC -- tucked between the quiet of Edisto and the resort of Hilton Head, with a personality somewhere in between, just as the location might suggest. We went yesterday for the first time and had such a fabulous day I  Read more...

Feed the family: manny's neighborhood grill

September 08, 2008

Each time I walk into Manny's Neighborhood Grill with my kids, I hear the words of Reese Witherspoon's character in Sweet Home Alabama : "You have a baby. In a bar." And yes, Manny's looks and feels like the sports bar that it is. But think for a moment -- the same characteristics that make it work for the weekend football crowd also make it a great fit for small children: namely, that it's  Read more...

Tuesday top five: best places to see fish in Charleston

August 19, 2008

Considering we live on a peninsula (or thereabouts) surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and countless smaller waterways, there is no shortage of fish in Charleston. Here are my top five recommendations for places to go to view the watery world -- and all of the life teeming within it! 1. I like the South Carolina Aquarium . A lot. And while I've talked about it before , they keep adding children's  Read more...

Escape by licking?: a lot-o gelato in Charleston

July 25, 2008

There's nothing like a sweet, frozen concoction on a hot summer's day. Ice cream and popsicles are fine, of course, but why not turn that afternoon treat into a little taste of Italy? There are two gelato shops downtown, Paolo's Gelato and Gelateria Modica , and they are both fabulous. If you haven't tried gelato before, you'll be delighted. It's more flavorful than ice cream, and with less fat  Read more...

How To Be A Princess for a Day

May 20, 2008

Step 1: Put on your tiaras. If you're going to be a prince or princess, you need some bling. Pull out your favorite tiara and place it proudly upon your head. If you don't have a tiara, make one! A simple combination of construction paper and glitter will do. Getting into costume, even in a small way, helps with getting into character. Step 2: Head to the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry .  Read more...
